Purpose The purpose of the Nail Technology program is to provide accessible, quality educational opportunities that will provide individuals with the knowledge, technical skills, and attitudes necessary to obtain entry-level employment in the nail technology profession. The certificate program is designed to produce graduates who, when licensed, are prepared for entry-level careers as manicurists , nail technicians , nail artists, or receptionists. Program graduates are to be competent in the technical areas of manicuring, pedicuring, artificial nail applications, and nail design. Reid State Technical College will accomplish program objectives by providing students with comprehensive technical training in the core area of nail technology. The program is carefully constructed to provide the student with skills and knowledge required for the Alabama Board of Cosmetology licensure examination. Theoccupational skill preparation should meet the Alabama Board of Cosmetology recognized skill standards. The collegewill ensure program quality through internal certification of graduate competencies and external licensure of graduates and program approval by the Alabama Board of Cosmetology. The philosophy and purpose of the Nail Technology program is consistent with that of the governing institution. Employment Outlook According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Outlook Handbook 2010-2011 Edition, barbers, cosmetologists, and other personal appearance workers held 684,200 jobs. Of these, manicurists and pedicurists held 76,000 jobs. Most of these workers are employed in personal care services establishments such as beauty salons, nail salons, day and resort spas. Others were employed in nursing and other residential care homes. Nearly every town has a beauty salon, but employment in this occupation is concentrated in the most populous cities and states. About 44 percent personal appearance workers are self-employed. Many of these workers own their own salon, but a growing number of the self-employed lease booth space or a chair from the salon?s owner. In this case, workers provide their own supplies and are responsible for paying their own taxes and benefits. Personal appearance workers will grow by 20 percent from 2008-2018, which is much faster that the average for all occupations. Manicurists and pedicurists meanwhile will grow by 19 percent, faster than the average. Employment trends are expected to vary; service spas and nail salons will also generate numerous job openings for manicurists and pedicurists. Job opportunities generally should be good, particularly for licensed personal appearance workers seeking entry-level positions. Program Outcome Objectives 1.
