Computer Information Systems from Rider University - Lawrenceville is a Campus Bachelor Computer and Information Science degree that prepares you for a IT career. The CIS faculty has a rich blend of teaching, research, and industry expertise, providing students with the conceptual and practical knowledge necessary to pursue a successful career in information systems development and/or management. Students with a major in CIS develop a solid understanding of the use, design, development, and management of information systems and information technology. All of the CIS courses are designed to give students the opportunity to develop and manage a variety of projects that can be applied to real business settings immediately. Increasingly, organizations that seek individuals with an information systems specialization expect excellent organizational, communications, and interpersonal skills, in addition to excellent analytical skills. Students, who major in CIS choose one of three curriculum models that is in line with the industry needs of the 21st century. These concentration areas include E-business and Multimedia, Network and Enterprise Management, and Applications Development. In addition, all CIS students are encouraged to participate in a full semester co-op or summer internship experiences during their junior year. The department identifies the following three items as the key learning objectives for majors; goals one and two refer to students who take the core courses required by all business majors, while, goal three is specific to those students with a major or minor in CIS: 1. Through the required freshman-level CIS core course, Information Systems Essentials, all business students will be able to: * Apply practical knowledge in their use of computer-based productivity tools. * Demonstrate an understanding of enterprise integration applications such as SAP R/3. * Explain the value of electronically integrating the major functional areas of an organization in order to facilitate more effective management decision-making. 2. Through the required senior-level CIS core course, Management Information Systems, all business students will: * Demonstrate an understanding of the enabling information technologies (IT) that organizations worldwide are using to develop and sustain a strategic and competitive position in the marketplace. * Demonstrate knowledge about the benefits and drawbacks to adopting and using these information technologies. 3. Students with a major or a minor in Computer Information Systems will be able to demonstrate their understanding of information technology by applying their technical knowledge and skills to provide a practical solution to a business problem, business need or business opportunity. The CIS co-op program is offered to juniors during their spring semester. Students work full-time (35 hours/week) for an organization after a formal interview process that takes place during the fall term. In addition, the student attends special seminars and workshops on campus to integrate the co-op experience with our business curriculum. The co-op is an intensive 12-credit learning experience.
