About the Program Ridgewater?s Carpentry program has the perfect blend of classroom, lab, and construction site experiences ? culminating in the building of one or two houses each year. During the first year, students are also involved in a variety of hands-on lab activities including framing, rafter systems, stair construction, exterior and interior finish, cabinetry, concrete work and remodeling. The classroom focuses on everything from carpentry principles to green construction methods. Along with advanced lab activities, second-year students get hands-on construction experience from footings to the ridge cap. They take a comprehensive look at construction management skills and what it takes to run a job. Second-year students also work on job scheduling, building and site layout, material organization, building energy code, small business, and advanced estimating. The entire curriculum focuses on the latest tools and techniques, including green eco-friendly building methods. They utilize recycled materials, energy-efficient components, and new decision-making processes aimed at improving performance across all the metrics that matter most: energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts. Additionally, our Carpentry students have helped with community projects, such as renovating a halfway house for the Community Action Agency and building homes for Habitat for Humanity. Carpentry work is active and sometimes strenuous, but exceptional strength is not required. There can be prolonged standing, climbing, and squatting.
