GOALS The goal of the Dance Education Program is to prepare individuals with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to be effective dance educators. This is nurtured through coursework, community dialogue and events, peer collaboration, independent projects, fieldwork, and mentored internship. The program has three supporting outcomes: To develop knowledge about the historical development of dance education and multiple perspectives on current issues To develop knowledge about the pedagogy of teaching dance, and how individual differences among children with respect to abilities, and social, economic, and cultural backgrounds influence learning To develop skills in designing curriculum, applying instructional strategies, developing class management techniques, as well as constructing and implementing assessments Master's Degree (Ed.M.) in Dance Education with PK-12 Dance Teacher Certification This degree track is for individuals who have already obtained an undergraduate degree in dance or have an undergraduate degree and professional status in the field of dance and want to prepare for careers in: PK-12 public schools Educational leadership in dance communities Doctoral study and careers as PK-12 dance-teacher preparation faculty on the university level. Individuals on this track apply to the Graduate School of Education, are advised by Mason Gross Dance faculty and take courses within the GSE and Mason Gross. This track includes practical fieldwork study and mentoring from a professional PK-12 dance educator during a student teaching internship. Early in the program students participate in school observations and field trips to survey successful dance programs and meet dance educators in NJ and NYC schools. Throughout the program, students gradually accumulate a web-based teaching portfolio that sets them apart for job seeking and employment interviews. The portfolio includes their performance and choreography samples, a teaching vision as well as sample lesson plans, units of study, a management plan, sample assessments, a home-school plan, and a curriculum design, etc. Two courses in professional issues during the final semester of study prepare students for the college-to-profession transition and employment seeking. Students interested in pursuing jobs in the New York City schools or becoming certified in another state may also partake in special advisement sessions. After conferral of the Ed.M. degree , the Graduate School of Education recommends the student to the New Jersey Department of Education for PK-12 dance teacher certification. Graduates will receive a New Jersey Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing (CEAS), which is valid for a lifetime, allowing individuals flexibility in their career choices.
