Music students focus on the history and theory of music, exploring historical genres and periods represented in different cultures and styles. Music students develop skills in theoretical analysis, listening perception and analysis, and music composition. Senior Music students complete a thesis project in history or theory and composition, working in consultation with a faculty mentor. Music Emphasis Requirement Students who pursue a music emphasis are required to take a placement examination in music theory prior to the first week of classes. Students who demonstrate adequate knowledge of music theory fundamentals may enroll in MU111: Advanced Music Theory. Students who do not demonstrate adequate fundamentals knowledge are required to enroll in MU110: Introduction to Music Theory as a pre-requisite to Advanced Music Theory. (MU110 may be counted as a Music Elective in this case.) Three Departmental Requirements: MU111, MU140, FAH490. Four Music History Period Courses: MU240, MU341, MU342, MU343. Three Music Specialty Courses from the following: MU120, MU210, MU241, MU242, MU243, MU244, MU350, MU351, MU352, or a Music Special Topics course.
