Part-time or full-time attendance is possible. The college automotive shop is one of the most modern in the area, housing the latest equipment for training in the automotive industry. Students spend approximately 40 percent of their time in class and 60 percent in "hands-on" shop work. The shop can handle up to 18 vehicles and is used for actual repairs and on-the-job experience. Curriculum The Automotive Technology curriculum provides a full background in all of the automotive mechanical repair areas. Upon graduation, students may seek employment specializing in one specific area or may find employment that requires general exposure to all of the mechanical repair areas. Employment Prospects Employment opportunities for well-trained automotive technicians are increasing. Job vacancies occur at automobile dealerships, independent garages and repair shops, discount stores, tire centers, service centers, etc. According to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, job opportunities for automotive service technicians and mechanics are expected to be very good for persons who complete automotive training programs in high school, vocational and technical schools, or community colleges, as employers report difficulty in finding workers with the right skills.
