Program Description The concentration in ESOL consists of six 3-credit courses. These courses are designed to prepare student to work with limited English speakers in a variety of settings. Five of the courses satisfy Florida?s ESOL Endorsement for Category 1 teachers (Elementary and Secondary English) and one course satisfies Florida?s ESOL Endorsement for Category 2 teachers and administrators. The program is accepted by the Florida Department of Education?s Bureau of Certification under Rule 6A-4.003. ?Degrees, programs, and credits shall be determined acceptable for educator certification purposes based when awarded by an institution of higher learning accredited by one (1) of the regional accrediting associations. St. Thomas University is accredited by The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.? Program Student Learning Outcomes The graduate ESOL program is designed to prepare student to work with limited English speakers in a variety of settings. Program learning outcomes are aligned with the TSOL/NCATE?S Standards that are organized around five domains. Domain 1: Language . Candidates know, understand, and use the major concepts, theories, and research related to the nature and acquisition of language to construct learning environments that support ESIL students? language and literacy development and content area achievement. Domain 2: Culture. Candidates know, understand, and use the major concepts, theories, and research related to the nature and role of culture and cultural groups to construct learning environments that support ESOL students? cultural identities, language and literacy development, and content area achievement. Domain 3: Planning, Implementing, and Managing Instruction. Candidates know, understand, and use standards-based practices and strategies related to planning, implementing, and managing ESL and content institution, including classroom organization, teaching strategies for developing and integrating language skills, and choosing and adapting classroom resources. Domain 4: Assessment. Candidates understand issues of assessment and use standards-based assessment measures with ESOL students. Domain 5: Professionalism. Candidates demonstrate knowledge of the history of ESL teaching. Candidates keep current with the new instructional techniques, research result6s, advances, in the ESL field, and public policy issues. Candidates use such information to reflect upon and improve their instructional practices. Candidates provide support and advocate for ESOL students and their families and work collaborate to improve the learning environment. Program Student Learning Outcomes Assessment A locally-develop ext examination is used for program level assessment. The examination is designed to assess a candidate's proficiency in the five domains covered in the program. A candidate is required to take the examination before graduation.
