Environmental Science from Salish Kootenai College is a Campus Bachelor Enviroment degree that prepares you for a Science career. Program Description The Environmental Sciences Program exists in response to the increased needs by tribes and students for training in environmental research, management, recovery, and protection while recognizing the cultural importance of natural resources. This interdisciplinary program is unique in its combination of technological and scientifi c study with Native American culture and other socio-political systems. Most students will specialize in one of the two options: Terrestrial Resources Management or Aquatic Resources Management. The Terrestrial Resources Management option emphasizes conservation and sustainable use of wildlife, plant communities, and wildlands. The Aquatic Resources Management option emphasizes restoration and management of aquatic and riparian ecosystems through study of the biological, chemical and physical components of watersheds. Students who are considering careers in environmental policy, environmental education, or environmental law may prefer to take electives from both areas and receive a general Environmental Science degree . Students may not, however ?double-major? in both options. Degree Objectives Upon completion of the Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Sciences, a student will, in addition to the goals listed above, be able to: Demonstrate broad-based theoretical and technological knowledge of environmental and resource sciences . Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and a knowledge base of the role of the natural world in tribal life, and develop an approach to environmental research and management that honors a tribe?s cultural values. Understand the economic and political systems of Native American reservation governments and those agencies that interact with reservations. Apply techniques in communication and conflict resolution that build support among tribal and non-tribal members for strong environmental policies.
