A significant goal of the School of Art, Design, and Art History at SDSU is the creative growth of its students. Thus, the school focuses on the development of sound undergraduate and graduate programs that provide a strong basic education in art and a high degree of professional competence. The Art degree at SDSU will enable you to expand your perceptual skills, generate original ideas, and develop a broad cultural awareness of the visual arts in society. While pursuing an Art degree , you will learn to think visually and acquire a creative intelligence through practicing and studying visual arts. Program Overview The School of Art, Design, and Art History has the following areas of emphasis: art history; applied design, with specialties in ceramics, furniture, and metalsmithing/jewelry; interior design; graphic design; multimedia, painting and printmaking; sculpture; and studio arts. The School also offers a program of study for the single subject waiver program in Art. There is a broad spectrum of introductory courses available to both art majors and non-majors in art history, art appreciation, basic design and drawing. Special Features Student Organizations. The School of Art, Design, and Art History hosts a number of student organizations including the American Institute of Graphic Artists, the American Society of Interior Designers, the Art History Association, and the Furniture Design Association. Ceramic art formThe School has an excellent base of facilities and equipment in many program areas. These include: top woodworking, jewelry, ceramic and foundry studios; exceptional printmaking and photography labs; three computer labs; elaborate computer labs and advanced software for art and design; and three gallery exhibition spaces. The School also houses Art, Etc., an art supply store. Since 1978, the School has held national accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). Two of our former Directors are Commissioners of NASAD and they continue to take an active role in ensuring the quality of arts education nationwide. The University Art Gallery has organized exhibitions that feature the work of artists from all around the world, including various Asian countries, European countries, Russia, Australia, Canada, and Mexico. The Gallery has also exhibited the work of artists from throughout the United States who represent the nation's ethnic diversity. The Everett Gee Jackson Gallery features graduate exhibitions and select group shows. The Flor y Canto Gallery features work by outstanding undergraduates. A new gallery in the heart of San Diego's downtown introducing residents and tourists alike to the university and to the School of Art, Design, and Art History JewelryStudents and faculty are involved in professional organizations, including the American Institute of Graphic Art (AIGA), the American Society of Interior Design (ASID), National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA), the Society for North American Goldsmiths (SNAG), American Craft Council, the Society of Photographic Education, and The Furniture Society. Work Experience. A thriving internship program places students in professional settings in graphic design firms, interior design offices, galleries, museums and schools in the Southern California region and, specifically, the San Diego community. Among the many internship opportunities are the San Diego Museum of Art, the Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego Union-Tribune, Qualcomm, KFMB Studios, and NBC 7/39. The School promotes international programs and exchanges with institutions in Turkey, Scotland, Mexico, and Japan. Numerous scholarship endowments and annual donations enable the School to provide ongoing scholarship support for our students. Career Opportunities Graduates of the School are employed in a variety of settings; some work for companies while others are self-employed.
