Culinary Arts from Sandhills Community College is a Campus Certificate Food degree that prepares you for a Vocational Programs career. Careers in Culinary Arts Everyone enjoys a great meal, but not everyone can prepare a great meal. Most successful chefs have attended culinary schools or college to obtain the knowledge and skills necessary to become successful in the culinary and food management business. Chefs coordinate and manage kitchen staffs, plan menus, and order food and supplies for the menu while remaining within the budget. Job Outlook Job openings for chefs, cooks, and food preparation workers are expected to be plentiful through 2016; however, competition should be keen for jobs in the top kitchens of higher-end restaurants. The number of higher-skilled chefs and cooks working in full-service restaurants ? those that offer table service and more varied menus ? is expected to increase about as fast as the average. Employment of institution and cafeteria chefs and cooks will show growth. Employment of private household cooks is projected to grow. Our Program The Culinary Technology curricula provide specific training required to prepare students to assume positions as trained culinary professionals in a variety of food service settings including full-service restaurants, hotels, resorts, clubs, catering operations, contract food service, and health care facilities. Course offerings emphasize practical application, a strong theoretical knowledge base and professionalism and provide the critical competencies to successfully meet industry demands. Courses also include sanitation, food-beverage service and cost controls, baking, Garde Manger, American/international and classical cuisines, food production, and hospitality supervision. Graduates should qualify for mid-level positions, such as line cooks, station chefs, and assistant pastry chefs. With experience, graduates may advance to positions such as sous-chefs, executive chefs or food service managers. View more details on Sandhills Community College .
