Landscape Gardening from Sandhills Community College is a Campus Associate Landscaping degree that prepares you for a Agriculture career. Careers in Landscape Gardening Attractively designed, healthy, and well-maintained, landscapes, gardens and grounds create a positive impression, establish a peaceful mood, and increase property values. Many national companies recruit graduates from the Landscape Gardening program at Sandhills. The White House grounds are managed by two of our graduates. Another is head of the gardens at Monticello; and one is head of Reynolda Gardens. There are many horticulturists at the NC Zoo who are graduates of our program, as are the Arborist at Bartlett Tree Company, the city horticulturists for Laurinburg and Rockingham, and the Grounds Supervisor at Pinehurst Resorts. Sandhills? graduates find employment with garden centers, greenhouse operations, nurseries, and public or private gardens. They also often work with established landscape companies or become self-employed. Employment Outlook Employment is expected to increase by 16 percent during the 2006 to 2016 decade, which is faster than the average for all occupations. Employment will grow because the expertise of landscape architects will be sought after in the planning and development of new construction to meet the needs of a growing population. With land costs rising and the public desiring more beautiful spaces, the importance of good site planning and landscape design is growing. New construction will spur employment demand to help plan sites that meet environmental regulations and zoning laws and integrate new structures with the natural environment in the least disruptive way. Our Program The curriculum emphasizes intensive, practical, hands-on training in applied horticulture to reinforce classroom lecture on theory and technique. Course work includes plant propagation, greenhouse and nursery plant culture, turf management, plant identification, arboriculture, diseases and pests of plants, and landscape planning, maintenance and construction. Sandhills Community College is home to the 32-acre Sandhills Horticultural Gardens, which is designed and maintained by students in the Landscape Gardening program. Classes are taken in a new 17,000 square-foot building constructed in 2009. To the rear of the building are three newly renovated glass greenhouses. Graduates will be prepared for employment opportunities in applied horticulture related to landscape development and maintenance for residential and commercial operations. Graduates should be prepared to take the North Carolina Pesticide Applicator?s Examination and the North Carolina Certified Plant Professional Examination.
