SAIC's Master of Arts in Art Education [MAAE] Program at SAIC is an individualized, 36-credit-hour program designed for teachers , museum educators, artists, and other arts professionals who are seeking to acquire or improve skills as an effective arts educator and agent of change. The program promotes and reflects the expansion of the field of art education by preparing candidates for a wide variety of contexts, including schools, museums, cultural institutions, community-based organizations, and alternative settings. The Department of Art Education's philosophy has both led, as well as responded to, innovation in the field of art education . The department has adopted the term visual culture to describe content knowledge for teachers and facilitators of visual art. Visual culture defines multiple forms of cultural production, which together constitute our visual environment. A key concept in the MAAE program is that of the critical citizen?an individual who is self-reflective, has a deep concern for the lives of others, and actively questions and challenges the social, political, and cultural structures and discourses comprising everyday life. Critical citizenship in visual culture constitutes the active, democratic engagement of teachers and learners in the production and exchange of all forms of visual communication. The MAAE's innovative curriculum provides a foundation in educational theory and practice necessary for teaching and interpreting art , developing art-based curricula, and creating educational arts programming. Students are encouraged to take electives in emphasis areas outside the Art Education department, including film, video, and new media, sculpture, performance, or painting and drawing. Situating an academically rigorous professional program within a fine arts context gives students the freedom to enrich their curriculum with various studio-based practices. Chicago is a vibrant city, and the MAAE program requires fieldwork and/or an internship with one of the many distinguished cultural institutions and community-based organizations in the Chicago area. Sites where candidates have worked recently include: the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Field Museum of Natural History, Beyondmedia Education , Chicago's Department of Cultural Affairs, Chicago Park District, Project Onward, Marwen, Hyde Park Art Center, and South Side Community Art Center. The MAAE program also provides certified teachers currently working in schools with the opportunity to focus on advanced curricular studies through coursework and thesis research connected to their own teaching contexts.
