Practical Nursing from Schuylkill Technology Centers is a Campus Certificate Nursing Practice degree that prepares you for a Nursing career. The Practical Nursing Program is available on a full-time basis during week days. The day division covers a 12 month period with enrollment beginning in August and March of each calendar year. Employment opportunities for LPN?s are constantly expanding in hospitals, clinics, public health agencies, doctors offices, extended care facilities and private homes. LPN?s can also continue their education to enter professional nursing and other health care fields. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will be eligible to take the Pennsylvania State Licensure Exam for Practical Nurses. Curriculum ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY ~ 80hr/4cr A study of basic anatomy and physiology of all body systems is prefaced with a brief introduction to the principles of chemistry, microbiology, and physics as they relate to body physiology. MENTAL HEALTH NURSING I ~ 41hr/2cr An introduction to basic mental health nursing as it relates to the total health of the students and patients. Theories of mechanisms, reactions of stress and personality development are presented. GERIATRICS ~ 27hr/1cr A study of the concepts, theories, and characteristics of aging. The student is introduced to the programs available to help the elderly maintain quality of life. Death and dying are presented with an emphasis on the role of the care provider as he/she relates to the client and significant others. NURSING I ~ 104hr/4.5cr A study of theory and clinical practice of basic bedside nursing care. Course emphasizes the principles underlying procedures, development of skills in patient observation, effective communication and utilization of principles of teaching to help achieve patient, family, and community health. NURSING II ~ 36hr/1.5cr A study of theory and clinical practice of advanced nursing care. This course emphasizes the principles underlying procedures, development of skills in therapeutic measures, and preparation of the patient for diagnostic tests. NURSING III ~ 212hr/10cr A study of specific diseases and disorders affecting the various body systems of adults and children that includes common symptoms, diagnostic studies, treatment regimes (including diet therapy and related pharmacology), and nursing care as it relates to that specific disorder. NURSING IV ~ 10hr/.5cr Geriatric nursing theories and standards are reviewed as they apply to the LPN in the geriatric care setting. Application of basic leadership skills in geriatric settings is discussed. MENTAL HEALTH NURSING II ~ 18hr/.5cr An introduction to basic mental health concepts as they relate to the total health of the students and patients. Theories of crisis intervention, mental defense mechanisms, and basic communication techniques are presented. PHARMACOLOGY ~ 142hr/7cr Students will learn the fundamental principles of drug action; develop skills to administer specific drugs used in the treatment, prevention, and diagnosis of disease; and develop the ability to implement appropriate nursing actions to maximize the desired outcomes of therapy. FAMILY-CENTERED HEALTH CARE ~ 60hr/3cr This course deals with the normal physical, psychological, and social patterns of development from conception through senescence. Included are theory and related clinical experience in the care of mothers, newborn infants, and children. PERSONAL & VOCATIONAL RELATIONS ~ 44hr/2cr The student is oriented to Practical Nursing and the health delivery system. A study of vocational, legal, and ethical aspects of nursing preparation for the world of work; and the process of applying for licensure and the NCLEX are included. CLINICAL PRACTICUM ~ 771hr/23cr Each clinical term is an entity unto itself with unique experiences that enable the student to apply skills in specific clinical setting.
