Women's Studies emerged as an interdisciplinary field of study on college campuses in the 1970s. Shenandoah University's Women's Studies Program places women and the role of gender at the center of its curriculum and includes courses grounded in feminist theory and practice. Women's Studies is more than a curriculum; it relies on community involvement and outreach as well as gender-focused events and programming for its completion and success. A minor in women's studies complements any major by expanding students' knowledge and understanding of the human experience. Students who minor in women's studies are well prepared for careers in arts, education, communication, politics, law, business, health, human services, counseling, community advocacy and affirmative action programs. The Women's Studies Program works closely with local groups to raise gender awareness and acts as a resource for information related to women's issues. The program sponsors a monthly interdisciplinary lecture series that includes our own faculty, as well advocates and scholars from outside the university. Noteworthy speakers have included actress, author and documentary filmmaker Angela Shelton and former Washington Post reporter and author Asra Nomani. Women studies minors are integral to the organization and planning of annual campus events, such as the Take Back the Night Rally, the Candlelight Vigil, and most recently, The Glass Breaking Project.
