This interdisciplinary major blends the strengths of our Fine Arts Department in Photography, Visual Design, and Digital Darkroom with the strengths of our English, Journalism and International Studies programs. Students design a course of study that allows them to integrate writing, image creation, and technology in both practical and theoretical applications. Outcomes Interdisciplinary Majors in Photojournalism will: Develop, research, and write news stories and take corresponding photographs. Recognize news, make judgments about its value, distinguish news articles from other varieties of articles, and write competently in each category using AP style. Demonstrate knowledge of photo techniques to capture images that are in focus, display compositional elements, have correct exposure, use flash appropriately, and reflect mastery of camera and computer applications to compose photos that tell a story. Use appropriate software to accomplish effective photo composition as well as general layout and design of newspapers both in print and online and be able to critique and edit media writing and photography. Demonstrate awareness of interdisciplinary links between photography and journalism both conceptually and in practice. Make ethical choices in regard to media coverage, practices, and production.
