Astronomy from Smith College is a Campus Bachelor Astronomy degree that prepares you for a Science career. Astronomy is the study of the cosmos, from our home planet to the farthest reaches of the universe. One of the original liberal arts, astronomy offers students an unparalleled perspective for appreciating our planet and the life that it supports. It also provides an opportunity to appreciate the simplicity of the forces of nature and to understand how these forces govern the origin and evolution of our universe and all its constituents. The Astronomy Department at Smith College is a member of theFive College Astronomy Department, a departmental consortium with the astronomy departments of Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College and the University of Massachusetts. Together we offer a rich curriculum in astronomy and astrophysics, taught by faculty from all 5 instituions. Since an astronomy major is very integrated with physics, our majors also take courses in the Physics Department, and often double major in physics and astronomy. Most of our majors become involved in astronomy research, either working with our faculty, with the faculty of the Five College Astronomy Department, or astronomers from other institutions that offer summer internships. Smith astronomy majors go on to many different pursuits, including graduate study in Astronomy or other physical sciences , research support jobs at major observatories and science institutes, science education, non-profit organizations, computer science, law, and many more. In addition to rigorous courses for students majoring in astronomy, we offer a number of courses aimed at non-specialists who are eager to learn about the cosmos, the night sky, and how to use telescopes.
