Biochemistry is the science that studies the molecular basis for the biological process that takes place in all living organisms - plant, animal or human. As a result, biochemistry is an excellent major for students who are intent on a postgraduate degree in medicine, graduate studies or who would like to work in industries such as biofules, or pharmaceuticals. The biochemistry major is an inherently interdisciplinary major, perhaps the most interdisciplinary major at SDSU. It's much more than a chemistry major with some biology, or a biology major with some additional chemistry. It is a combination of advanced biochemistry , biology and chemistry coursework that students can tailor to the systems that are of particular interest to them. Students interested in going on to study medicine elective courses within the major that prepare them for the admission requirements of medical schools. Students can choose to study plant biochemistry or even the biochemistry of environmental processes such as those involving bacteria through the advanced electives that they choose to complete their plan of study. Undergraduate Research All students are required to work on their own biochemistry related research project during at least one summer they are enrolled in the major. Many students do two and some even do three. These are paid experiences that not only provide direct exposure to research and research training but because they are paid they are a significant form of financial aid. Undergraduate research is where the content knowledge gained in instructional lectures and labs gets put into practice. An undergraduate research project is a unique experience where students get to work one-on-one with a faculty member and the other members of their research group pursuing questions that have not been answered.
