Child Development from South Plains College is a Campus Associate Child Care degree that prepares you for a Human Services career. The Child Development program is designed to provide students with a theoretical knowledge base and practical experience which will enable them to work within the field of child development. The student may receive an Associate of Applied Science degree in Child Development , an Early Childhood Administrator?s Certificate, an Early Childhood Certificate, and a Family Advocate Certificate. Basic practicum experience is required in certain Child Development courses within the program. Specific tasks performed in the practicum setting vary according to skills, interests and course requirements. Students taking practicum courses must meet the requirements for licensed Child Care facilities as outlined in the Texas Minimum Standards: 1.) High school diploma or its equivalent; and 2.) Pass a Department of Protective and Regulatory Services criminal background check. The purpose of the background check is to determine that a person has no criminal or abuse and neglect history; and that their presence would not be a risk to the health or safety of children.
