Overview SCC?s Laboratory Science Technology program teaches students to demonstrate technical competence while obtaining a science background for application to a variety of positions. Program graduates demonstrate knowledge of laboratory safety as well as a mastery of laboratory instruments and computers. Graduation from the program requires six credit hours of practicum courses. These are hands-on courses which meet on-site at various laboratories in the Lincoln area. The practicum courses are a part of the curriculum in the student?s final three quarters in the program. Practicum sites are assigned by the student?s advisor, in conjunction with the student. Mission The mission of the Laboratory Science Technology program is to train students for occupational positions in government and private laboratories. Laboratory analysis of food, water, soils, and wastewater samples are common examples of work performed by graduates of the program. Job Outlook Graduates are in high-demand and work in a variety of laboratories, including quality assurance, analytical chemistry, biotechnology, microbiology, biochemistry, hazardous materials and safety, water treatment, and wastewater treatment. They also work in bioprocessing and bio-fuels, including ethanol production. Starting salaries are typically in the $28,000-$35,000 range. Hands-on laboratory experience and on-site practicums offer ample opportunities to perfect lab skills.
