The Department of Music prepares students to become proficient musicians and music educators capable of demonstrating the performance skills and knowledge necessary for sound musicianship. The department offers both the Bachelor of Music Education degree with an emphasis in vocal/keyboard or instrumental music for those students seeking a teaching license. The Music Department consists of a highly qualified faculty dedicated to students? musical and personal development. Class sizes are generally small, allowing for maximum individual attention. In addition to performances by students and faculty, each year the department, along with Magnolia Arts, brings guest artists to campus through its Performing Arts Series. Choral Ensembles The Southern Arkansas University Choral Department includes two ensembles, each open to music and non-music majors. The Heritage Singers is a group of 40-60 vocalists which concentrates on the preparation of a wide variety of discriminate choral literature. The choir presents several concerts throughout the year both on campus and in the Magnolia area. Select vocalists from regional high schools are invited to join the Heritage Singers in the performance of a major work in the annual SAU Masterworks Festival. Members of the Heritage Singers may also audition for the Chamber Singers, an ensemble of 18-24 singers which focuses on chamber literature in a variety of styles ranging from Renaissance madrigals to contemporary vocal jazz.
