The surgical technologist assists other surgical team members as needed. Although surgical technologists operate primarily in surgical settings, they also function in a variety of areas where aseptic/sterile techniques are of vital importance, as well as environments where expert knowledge of surgical and biomedical tools and equipment is essential. Areas of employment include, but are not limited to, surgery departments, central supply management, trauma centers, labor and delivery, teaching, as well as medical equipment sales. Certified Surgical Technologists with further experience may pursue advance training for non ?physician surgical assistants, and upon completing eligibility requirements sit and take the National Surgical Assistants exam to become CST/CSA. The Surgical Technology Program accepts students during the Fall Semester and Spring Semester. It is not mandatory to complete all the general supporting courses before applying for clinical courses, but those who take the surgical technology preliminary courses in Spring and apply for acceptance to the Program in the summer are advised to have completed most of their supporting courses, because they only have three semesters to complete the Program requirements for graduation. Students who complete the Program successfully will receive the Associate of Science in Surgical Technology (AS). Although it is not require that students pass the National Certification Exam to graduate, all students must take the exam prior to graduation as required for the Accreditation Review Committee on Surgical Technology and surgical Assisting (ARCST/SA). A National Exam Review course is offered each Spring semester. Students who are successful on the National Certification Exam for Surgical Technology become a Certified Surgical Technologist, with the title of CST.
