SWCC's program is one of three specialized programs in the United States dedicated to structural engineering technology. The program provides students with a good blend of the basics, starting with fundamental drafting , followed by concrete technology, and computer aided drafting (CAD). Students study plan reading, which enables them to logically locate items in commercial and residential building and bridge plans. Detailing fabrication drawings for structural and miscellaneous steel is very demanding and requires specialized training. Students who apply themselves will graduate with the required skills necessary for a successful career in the industry. Every graduate has the opportunity to network with employers in the industry while studying at Southwestern. Steel detailers are in great demand and therefore many times an employer may choose to invite the entire class to visit their company. Program instructor Al Binning is a member of the National Institute of Steel Detailing (NISD) and American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) and is a certified SDS/2 instructor.
