The University at Albany offers a Ph.D. program that allows students to receive a solid grounding in philosophy while concentrating on one of two areas of specialization: Knowledge and Representation or Values and Society. The Knowledge and Representation specialization focuses on contemporary and historical accounts of representational systems: cognitive, linguistic, aesthetic, and cultural. The Values and Society specialization focuses on the problems of moral and political values in relation to their social context. All students begin with a strong core of courses in epistemology, metaphysics, value theory, logic, and the history of philosophy. They then take further courses and do their PhD dissertation research within their elected area of specialization. Students work at all times in close cooperation with individual faculty members in their area. Students are encouraged where appropriate to complement their study with advanced courses in cognate fields. The Program in Linguistics and Cognitive Science, other academic departments in the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Graduate School of Public Affairs offer courses of particular interest to philosophers.
