The Philosophy Major We believe it is important for you to gain a broad, liberating education. To this end, we have constructed a program that allows you a great deal of exploration outside the major. What You Can Do With a Philosopy Major Philosophy majors have been successful in a wide range of careers such as law, medicine, business, government and college teaching. Philosophy is, arguably, one of the best preparations for law school; there is no more valuable asset in law than a keen ability to evaluate and construct arguments. Medical schools require preparation in biology, chemistry and mathematics, but often prefer applicants with a major outside the sciences (they believe that a humanized doctor is better than one who is not). Many of our majors have excelled in business and government work (they were hired for their writing, speaking, and thinking abilities; professional training took place on the job and was tailored to the job). And some majors, who simply could not leave philosophy , went on to pursue an advanced degree in the field. Typically, graduate schools need graduate students to relieve the teaching load of research-oriented professors. Typically, these schools pay a student's tuition plus a sti?pend that averages (at this time) roughly between $12,000 and $16,000 per year.
