Music Education from Syracuse University is a Campus Bachelor Teaching degree that prepares you for a Education career. The Music Education program includes a strong foundation in music and teaching including opportunities to nurture educational competencies, artistry and musicianship, and philosophical, theoretical and historical perspectives in music and music education. The Music Education program is a dual degree program offered jointly by the School of Education and the College of Visual and Performing Arts. As students engage in their teacher preparation, they will elect one of five specialty emphases in music education: brass, choral, woodwind, percussion or strings. Students will learn about all musical disciplines, including principal and secondary performance area, music history and theory, sight-singing, dictation, and conducting and ensemble participation. Music education students develop a knowledge and understanding of inclusive and diverse learning environments, preparing them to work with students of all abilities. Graduates posses a heightened awareness of individual needs, social justice, and are dedicated to creating learning environments that foster successful outcomes for all students. This combination of knowledge and skill provides graduates with a degree of flexibility in teaching that increases their marketability as educators. All options lead to the bachelor of music degree in music education (B.Mu.) and fulfill preparation requirements for New York State initial certification in the teaching of music at all grade levels.
