Sociology Department Undergraduate Mission Statement The mission of the Department of Sociology's Undergraduate Program is to provide students with a broad overview of the field of Sociology and an understanding of how sociological perspectives are applicable in research, teaching, community service, the labor force, and everyday life. Undergraduate Student Learning Outcomes The Sociology program aims to provide undergraduate students with 1) an understanding of how societies operate, 2) insight into the functioning of social institutions (e.g., political, economic, family, educational, legal, religious) and 3) in-depth knowledge of social inequality related to gender, race, ethnicity, class, sexuality, and disability, and social issues pertaining to aging and the life course, environment, health and health care, immigration, science and technology, and social policy. All students enrolled in Sociology courses are expected to acquire 1) a "sociological imagination", which involves an understanding of connections between social structure and individual experience, and 2) an appreciation of social theory and research, including being able to distinguish various theoretical perspectives, identify different modes of inquiry, and critically evaluate information. Sociology majors are expected to develop a skill set that includes analytic reasoning and writing, fundamentals of qualitative and quantitative research, information retrieval, and report presentation.
