Students receive hands-on training in diagnostic and laboratory techniques. They learn to give injections, and perform venipuncture and urinalysis. They study medical terminology, the respiratory and circulatory systems, and how to measure blood pressure, body temperatures, pulse and respiratory rates. They learn how to operate electrocardiology (ECG) machinery and read its graphs, and are trained in medical office emergency procedures including CPR. Students are also taught key administrative procedures including handling correspondence, scheduling appointments and communicating with patients. They are introduced to the concepts of medical insurance and billing processes and medical recordkeeping. After they successfully complete all coursework, students enter an externship in a healthcare setting to gain real-world experience.
