Medical Office Assistant from The Community College of Baltimore County is a Campus Associate Health Administration degree that prepares you for a Healthcare career. The Medical Office Assistant program is designed to prepare students for front office and back office careers in the medical office. The program provides administrative skills as well as a 3-course clinical sequence to ensure a solid foundation in basic clinical skills, venipuncture and specimen collection skills, and medication administration skills. Graduates of this program may expect to find employment as administrative medical assistants, clinical medical assistants , medical transcriptionists, medical billing clerks, hospital admitting clerks, and hospital unit secretaries. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that employment in this field is projected to grow much faster than average, ranking medical assistants among the fastest growing occupations over the 2006-16 decade. Courses may be taken in any sequence as long as prerequisites are met. Some courses may be offered in alternate semesters. Some courses in the Medical Office Assistant program are offered in a self-paced mode of instruction or online and are so designated in the schedule of classes. Credit by exam is available for selected courses. Articulation: Baltimore County high school graduates may be eligible for advanced placement and credit in Office Administration courses. Program Outcomes Graduates of the Medical Office Assistant program will be able to: 1. produce first-time mailable copy from a variety of input media using state-of-the art software; 2. manage records and data electronically and manually; 3. combine organizational and technical skills to improve office workflow; 4. speak and write effectively for interpersonal, group, and office communication; 5. process coding and billing of medical records electronically; 6. assist in preparing patients for medical treatment or procedures and accurately document all procedures; 7. collect and process a variety of patient specimens; and 8. accurately dose and administer medication.
