The B.M.E. is designed for students seeking careers in the field of music education and prepares graduates to teach music in public and private schools. The degree includes professional certification in Music Education with accreditation by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) and National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Permission to major in music is required through audition and application to the department. The Department of Music has held accreditation by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) since 1971. All music courses and specializations have been approved by the National Association of Schools of Music. The B.M.E. includes the professional educational minor. The minor is a state approved pathway (Professional Training Option ? PTO) to the professional teaching certificate. In addition to completing the required coursework, the student must pass three Florida Teaching Certification Exams (Professional, Subject Matter and General Knowledge) to be eligible for a Florida temporary teaching certificate. Upon employment in a public school in Florida, the graduate will teach for one year while completing the district Professional Educator Competency program.
