The M.A. degree is based on instruction in graduate courses and either the writing of a thesis, the writing of a project paper or the publication of an article or monograph which the Department deems scholarly. M.A. students who wish to continue in the Ph.D. program are required to take a Comprehensive Exam after they have completed 9 courses in the M.A. program. The exam will consist of three questions: one theory, one methods/statistics, and one question in a substantive area of the student's choice. A Master of Arts degree in Sociology prepares students for careers in teaching, government and industry, or with community organizations. A total of 42 credit hours is required beyond the master's degree: a minimum of 30 hours of graduate course work and not more than 12 hours of thesis guidance. Unless taken during the master's program, course work must include two courses in statistics, two courses in methods, and two courses in theory.
