The Department of Media Study is internationally renowned for its groundbreaking contributions to experimental media theory and practice. As a department and as a community we are committed to producing work which challenges and extends conventional forms and representations and contributes to deep research in media arts practices. The MFA in Media Arts is one of the country's leading programs in experimental and independent media . Our MFA is a flexible program which enables students to work in or across media technologies and academic disciplines. Of the 60 credit hours required for the degree , 24 are in media production, 12 are in areas of media theory, 13 are in directed electives. The PhD in Media Study seeks to nurture the next generation of artist-scholars and assist them as they seek to define new art and research practices of the 21st century. Students develop with faculty supervision their research specialties and engage the university community to formulate deep individualized research trajectories in cutting edge media theory and practice. Commensurate with the traditional PhD framework, most of the credits are earned in research and independent study. Consequently, students are free to organize their course of study around specific research trajectories. Students will typically be ready for their qualifying exams in their forth and fifth semester and then dedicate themselves exclusively to thesis work with supervision of a faculty member, in consultation with a self-defined thesis committee with expertise in the areas of the student's research.
