The Spanish concentration/track at UAB offers an articulated approach to the study of the Spanish language and the culture, civilization and literature of the Spanish-speaking world. Literacy skills and understanding (e.g., reading, writing, speaking) are developed throughout the course of study, as well as the nurturing of critical and analytical skills. Majors will leave the program with the ability to engage in critical and cross-cultural analysis. Students have the opportunity to do in-depth work in special topics seminars like Afro-Hispanophone writers, Latino Topics and Peninsular Film. Typically, Spanish concentration majors have more than one major or a complement of minors to facilitate the applied aspect of language study (e.g., pre-health, education, anthropology, communication studies, business). Students graduating from UAB with a concentration in Spanish have gone on to graduate or professional school and/or employment in such fields as business, education, government, industry, international relations, law, medicine, publishing, translation, and interpretation. The Spanish concentration major has significant opportunities for community outreach activities (e.g., internships, service learning) in Alabama, and has diverse study abroad opportunities from which to choose.
