Students also gain a wide range of technical knowledge in welding applications, procedures, reading plans and specifications, and applied metallurgy. Welder qualification tests are administered as prescribed in AWS D1.1, API Standards 1104 or ASME IX welding codes. Students examine metallic components, or weldments, to locate and evaluate discontinuities by learning to apply liquid penetrant, magnetic particle, eddy current, radiographic, and ultrasonic test methods. Students may be qualified in each method based on general, specific, and practical examinations prescribed by the American Society for Nondestructive Testing.
