Ethnobotany from University of Alaska Fairbanks is a Campus Certificate Forestry degree that prepares you for a Science career. The ethnobotany certificate program involves interdisciplinary study of the role of native plants in indigenous cultures. Students will learn about native plants and their uses and ecology in the context of their cultural, social and economic importance by combining scientific and anthropological concepts and methods. The program emphasizes culturally relevant, place-based courses that highlight the ways this information contributes to other fields of study, such as cultural and natural resource management , community development, adaptive resilience, and human health. It is also designed to serve as a bridge to a variety of associate and baccalaureate programs in natural sciences and liberal arts. This program may be especially of interest to individuals employed by or interested in employment with state, federal or tribal agencies or other local entities in rural Alaska which provide natural resource management services. Admission requires a high school diploma or GED and interest in science-related fields. It is highly recommended that students have completed two high school lab-based science courses, preferably in biology, chemistry or physics. Students whose ACT/SAT scores are not sufficient for placement into college level courses will be required to take the ASSET or ACCUPLACER test and will be placed into the appropriate developmental level course.
