Use their knowledge and expertise in mathematics, science and engineering to solve problems from a wide range of fields and use these problem-solving skills in an integrated and intelligent manner for the analysis of complex engineering systems and the competent design of engineering systems and components; 2. Recognize the need for experiments and be able to design, carry out and interpret the results of an experimental program; 3. Successfully communicate the content and importance of their work to a broad range of audiences using a wide variety of media. This includes communication and operations in a multi-disciplinary team environment. In addition, our graduates are expected to maintain the highest standards of personal and professional integrity and ethical responsibilities; 4. Continue their education, both formally and informally, by making use of their research and study skills that were developed at BSU. These skills are essential to the extension of the graduates' technical skills and the proper understanding of their work in a social, ethical and economic context. PROGRAM EDUCATIONAL OUTCOMES: To attain the above-stated goals, we strive to achieve the following specific and measurable outcomes in our students while they are studying with us. Throughout the students' course of study the faculty and their designees will assess the extent to which students are meeting these expected outcomes. 1. When presented with a real-world problem, students will correctly assess the pertinent laws of physics (e.g. conservation of energy, Newton's Second Law of Motion, etc) and the assumptions that underlie their application. They will choose appropriate analytical methods and tools and critically assess the results of their analyses. Primary among these tools are: 1. Engineering mathematics including Calculus, Linear Algebra and ODE's 2. Engineering Mechanics (Statics, Dynamics, Strengths of Materials) 3. Thermal and Transport phenomena (Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer) 4. Multi-body kinematics and dynamics 2. Students will demonstrate an awareness of modern engineering computer methods and be able to apply them in an appropriate manner. 3. Students will be adept at group problem solving in a multidisciplinary team environment both as leader and participant. 4. Students will demonstrate the ability to design a component or process to meet specific performance specifications 5. Students will recognize the need for, and be capable of carrying out, experimental programs to verify assumptions or quantify poorly known phenomena or unknown information and properly use and interpret statistics. 6. Students will demonstrate the ability to plan and execute a presentation with technical content appropriate to the intended audience. Students will demonstrate the ability to produce written reports of a style and quality commensurate with industry standards. In both formal and informal interactions, students will be able to effectively communicate the import and implications of their work to a broad range of people, including those without technical backgrounds. 7. Students will demonstrate the ability to research new topic areas in a self-directed program of study. 8. Students will demonstrate the ability to characterize the economic and environmental impact of their work. 9. Students will exhibit both the behavior and perspective commensurate with an ethical professional possessing both knowledge of contemporary issues and an understanding of the impact of their work in a global and societal context.
