The Columbia College Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) program, housed in the Education Department (Ariail-Peele Building), offers a Bachelor of Arts Degree in speech-language pathology. Therapist candidates in this program have the option of graduating with or without South Carolina (SC) State Teacher Certification. Therapist candidates who graduate with SC State Teacher Certification are eligible to work in the SC public schools (until 2015 when a Master's degree will be required) or to receive SLP Assistant licensure. Therapist candidates who do not graduate with SC State Teacher Certification must pursue a Master's degree to work in a professional SLP setting. Therapist candidates in the SLP program at Columbia College complete coursework related to the development of speech, language, and hearing skills. Professional coursework also focuses on the nature, prevention, evaluation, and treatment of communication disorders. Unlike most undergraduate SLP programs, Columbia College provides a variety of field experience opportunities for therapist candidates. Off-campus field experiences are completed in the public schools, clinics, private practice offices. Speech-language pathologists are master's level professionals who evaluate, treat, and conduct research about human communication and its disorders. They work in schools, hospitals, businesses, in private practice, in universities, research laboratories, and government agencies, with infants and children, with adolescents and adults, and with older people (ASHA, 2002).
