Program Format: Campus Program Level: Bachelor

English from Furman University is a Campus Bachelor English degree that prepares you for a Liberal Arts career. The department of English at Furman produces students who are more than just good writers. Recognizing that the ability to communicate effectively through the written word is an essential aspect of any liberal arts education, the department strives to develop within its students a passion for literature and an appreciation for the multiple facets of a complete English education. The faculty maintains that the study of literature at a liberal arts college should start an intellectual interest in imaginative literature. English majors at Furman learn to develop a quality of attention to the creative use of language and to the various contexts ? formal, rhetorical, historical and philosophical ? within which the meanings and significances of literature can be explored. The intellectual flexibility that this kind of study encourages has always been a requirement for mature participation in civic and cultural life and has become especially important given the pervasiveness of modern media and technology in our culture. English majors develop abilities to communicate clearly, to think analytically and creatively, and to interpret carefully. These skills have served them well in such diverse fields as law, medicine, information technology, education, public relations, journalism, banking and ministry. The superb English faculty at Furman includes specialists in major fields of English and American literary studies. All are professionally active, many are publishing scholars, and three are published poets. The Major English majors take a minimum of nine courses in the major, one of which must be a seminar. The chair of the department confers with each new major to design a program that includes courses in earlier and later British literature and in American literature, as well as in poetry, drama and prose fiction. A course in language and a writing course are also strongly recommended. The particular design of each major's program takes into account his or her particular interests and goals. A student who intends to continue English study in graduate school will have a major program that differs significantly from that of a student whose goal is law school. Similarly, students certifying to teach English in secondary schools take a pattern of courses that meets the state standards for certification, as well as several courses in the Education department. Students who would like to teach in high school or college are encouraged to take more than the minimum number of courses in literature. View more details on Furman University .
