The department requires that students take a minimum of eight upper?level religion courses, one of them a senior seminar. Otherwise, majors may choose from an extensive list of course offerings, such as Old Testament prophets, Jesus and the Gospels, religion in America, Religion and Literature, Faith and Ethics, Hinduism, Religion and Culture, Christian Classics, Religion and Science, Buddhism, and Islam. More recent additions to the curriculum include Judaism, Women and Religion , Eastern Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism, Native American Religions, and Religious Pluralism. Many religion majors take advantage of Furman's strong study abroad programs. The Department of Religion sponsors an annual winter?term trip to the Mediterranean, where students explore the religious and historical significance of various ancient sites. Special attention is paid to biblical geography, archaeological discoveries, and the art and architecture of the sites visited. In recent years, the program has traveled to Turkey, Greece and Italy.
