Applied and Environmental Microbiology (AEM) section concentrates on the use of traditional and molecular techniques to explore environmental, industrial and medical aspects of the occurrence and biological activity of microorganisms. The inhibition of microbial processes by external agents in one main area of focus. The research makes full use of the state-of-the-art technologies available in the Microscopy and Imaging Core Facility and the DNA and Protein Core Facilities, within the Department of Biology. Other advanced instrumentation (e.g flow cytometry/FACS, HPLC, confocal microscopy) is housed within the laboratories of individual faculty within the group, or in communal equipment rooms. One principal aim of the group is to create an interactive and rewarding research environment, in which researchers are given every opportunity to develop valuable research skills and to excel in their chosen discipline. The GSU Environmental Research Center (ERC) is also based within the AEM group, and creates an interdisciplinary focus on environmental problems such as bioremediation/biology effects, biofilms and indoor air quality. The Center has developed rapidly through strong links with other Departments at GSU, other Institutions and with Industry. The AEM group also interacts closely with other groups within the Department of Biology, particularly in relation to molecular and cell-biological aspects of its research.
