Mission Statement The Bachelor of Science Degree with a major in Biology is designed to prepare the graduate with the knowledge, skills, and experiences to be able to compete and succeed in graduate and professional schools. The graduate will also be able to engage in careers that require knowledge and skills in Biology related fields. Goals A graduate in this program will be prepared to pursue graduate studies and to succeed in professional programs in areas such as medicine, dentistry, veterinarian science, and pharmacy. Objectives A graduate in this program will be able to: 1. effectively compete in a variety of biological career venues. The graduate will master the aspects of ?modern biology?, including genetics, microbiology and cell physiology, without losing sight of the more traditional subjects of natural selection, taxonomy, ecology, anatomy, and biological techniques. 2. demonstrate specific laboratory and technical skills essential in entering the job market and/or pursuing graduate education in the biological sciences. These essential skills include not only a demonstration of the mastery of biological topics, but also include such skills areas as microbiological techniques, taxonomy, dissection, field collection, and the ability to analyze scientific literature. 3. identify and describe basic physiologic processes including photosynthesis, respiration, osmoregulation, mineral nutrition, water transport, translocation of food and other metabolic substances, growth regulation and reproduction. 4. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of metabolic processes including energy transformations, metabolic pathways, and the role of enzymes in chemical reactions in organisms. 5. Able to recognize and discuss levels of organization in organisms and principles of homeostasis. 6. describe natural cycles involving the elements essential for life. 7. demonstrate the ability to organize a research project and defend the results, methods, and materials of the project. 8. provide written and oral evidence of his or her competency in biology.
