Patient Care Assistant from Health Opportunity Technical Center is a Campus Certificate Clinical Nurse degree that prepares you for a Nursing career. Patient Care Assistant Program Description - PCA The 300 clock hour program of study focuses on verbal and written communication skills, and the legal and ethical responsibilities of the patient care assistant in the hospital environment. It teaches how to perform personal patient care procedures, while providing a safe and comfortable environment for the hospitalized patient . The student learns the importance of nutrition along with the necessary skills in assisting the team to ensure proper hydration and nutrition of patients. The patient care assistant will be instructed in infection control measures specific to their focus of practice in the hospital setting while caring for the adult patient. The student will learn how to provide biological, psychological and social support to the patient and families. The prerequisite Health Science Core is included in the program. To begin this program the student must successfully complete the school's entrance exam. PCA Occupational Outcomes The course curriculum will focus in part on the adult patient and the restorative process, and the patient care assistant's role as part of the health care team. The student will be taught how to perform supervised organizational functions in assisting to implement the patient's plan of care . To receive a certificate of completion as a patient care assistant, the student must complete the competencies and clinical requirements equivalent to core curriculum, nursing assistant, home health aide and the patient care assistant. PCA Program Objectives Upon completion of this program the student will be able to: 1. Demonstrate knowledge of the health care delivery system and health occupations. 2. Demonstrate the ability to communicate and use interpersonal skills effectively. 3. Demonstrate knowledge of the patient care assistant's legal and ethical responsibility HIPAA. 4. Demonstrate an understanding of and apply wellness and disease concepts. 5. Recognize and practice safety and security procedures including domestic violence. 6. Recognize and respond to emergency situations BSL-CPR. 7. Recognize and practice infection control procedures OSHA. 8. Demonstrate computer skills. 9. Demonstrate employability skills. 10. Demonstrate knowledge of blood borne diseases, including AIDS. 11. Apply basic math and science skills. 12. Use verbal and written communication effectively. 13. Demonstrate legal responsibilities within the role of the patient care assistant. 14. Provide emergency care . 15. Describe the basic structure and function of body systems and the relationship in providing patient care. 16. Recognize abnormal signs and symptoms of common diseases. 17. Perform physical comfort and safety measures. 18. Perform a given list of personal patient care procedures satisfactorily. 19. Apply principles of nutrition in maintenance of food and fluid balance. 20. Provide care for geriatric patients with special considerations for appropriate needs. 21. Demonstrate application of infection control principles in caring for adult patients . 22. Provide biological, psychological, and social support in meeting the basic need of patients. 23. Perform organizational skills in following the patient's plan of care in completing care assignments for the adult patient . 24. Assist in the restorative care for patients with specific needs to reach their optimal level of independence. 25. Demonstrate effective employability skills in work ethics.
