Patient Care Technician from Health Opportunity Technical Center is a Campus Certificate Clinical Nurse degree that prepares you for a Nursing career. Patient Care Technician Program Description - PCT The 600 clock hour program is designed to prepare students for employment as advanced cross-trained nursing assistant, which is equivalent to the industry title of patient care technician. This program offers a broad foundation of knowledge and skills expanding the traditional role of the nursing assistant. The program focuses on broad transferable skills and stresses the understanding of planning, management, finance, technical and production skills. The curriculum is sequenced to produce seven occupational exit points after the completion of Core, which is required by all health science programs. The student receives a diploma in Patient Care Technician upon completion of all the program requirements. The prerequisite Health Science Core is included in the program. To begin this program the student must successfully complete the school's entrance exam. PCT Occupational Outcomes This program is designed to prepare students for employment as advanced cross-trained nursing assistant, which is equivalent to the industry title of patient care technician. This program offers a broad foundation of knowledge and skills expanding the traditional role of the nursing assistant. The program focuses on broad transferable skills and stresses the understanding of planning, management, finance, technical and production skills. The student receives a Diploma upon completion of course or program requirements. PCT Program Objectives Upon completion of this program the student will be able to: 1. Demonstrate knowledge of the health care delivery system and health occupations. 2. Demonstrate the ability to communicate and use interpersonal skills effectively. 3. Demonstrate knowledge of the legal and ethical responsibility of the patient care technician HIPAA. 4. Demonstrate an understanding of and apply wellness and disease concepts. 5. Recognize and practice safety and security procedures including domestic violence. 6. Recognize and respond to emergency situations BLS-CPR. 7. Recognize and practice infection control procedures OSHA. 8. Demonstrate computer skills. 9. Demonstrate employability skills. 10. Demonstrate knowledge of blood borne diseases, including AIDS. 11. Apply basic math and science skills. 12. Use verbal and written communication specific to the Nursing Assistant, Home Health Aide, Patient Care Assistant, and Phlebotomist, EKG Aide, Allied Health Assistant and Patient Care Technician. 13. Demonstrate legal and ethical responsibility according to the Nursing Assisting practice, Home Health Aide, Patient Care Assistant, Phlebotomist, EKG Aide, Allied Health Assistant, and Patient Care technician. 14. Perform physical safety and comfort procedures specific to the Nursing Assistant, Home Health Aide, Patient Care Assistant, Phlebotomist, EKG Technician, Allied Health Assistant, and Patient Care Technician. 15. Perform personal patient care procedures, Home Health Aide, Patient Care Assistant, Phlebotomist, EKG Technician, Allied Health Assistant, and Patient Care Technician. 16. Apply principles of nutrition specific to the Nursing Assistant, Home Health Aide, Patient Care Assistant, Phlebotomist, EKG Technician, Allied Health assistant, and Patient Care Technician. 17. Provide care for geriatric patients. 18. Apply the principles of infection control specific to the Nursing Assistant, Home Health Aide, Patient Care Assistant, Phlebotomist, and EKG Technician, Allied Health Assistant and Patient Care technician. 19. Provide biological, psychological, and social support specific to the Nursing Assistant, Home Health Aide, Patient Care Assistant, Phlebotomist, EKG Technician, Allied Health Assistant, and Patient Care Technician. 20. Perform supervised organizational functions following the plan of care . 21. Assist with restorative/rehabilitative activities. 22. Perform home health care services. 23. Perform nursing assisting skills related to the hospital setting. 24. Provide nursing assistance care for the adult patient . 25. Describe the cardiovascular system. 26. Identify legal and ethical responsibility related to the practice completed. 27. Demonstrate knowledge of how to use medical instrumentation modalities. 28. Perform the phlebotomy techniques in the health care setting. 29. Discuss phlebotomy in relation to the health care setting. 30. Identify the anatomical structure and function of body systems in relations to services performed by phlebotomist. 31. Recognize and identify collection reagents, supplies, equipment, and interfering chemical substances. 32. Demonstrate skills necessary to perform phlebotomy. 33. Practice infection control through compliance with universal precautions. 34. Practice acceptable procedures of transporting, accessioning, and processing specimens. 35. Practice quality assurance and safety. 36. Perform skills according to 1 ? 3 major allied health areas according to acceptable scope of practice as unlicensed assistive personnel. 37. Successfully complete clinical rotation in selected major allied health areas. 38. Demonstrate knowledge of organizational and effective team member skills. 39.
