Program Format: Campus Program Level: Bachelor

Chemistry from Houston Baptist University is a Campus Bachelor Chemistry degree that prepares you for a Science career. Program Description Our Department offers a student majoring in chemistry a strong foundation in theory and laboratory practice. We believe "doing chemistry" is as important as "learning" chemistry. Thus, laboratory courses are part of the curriculum from the beginning freshman year through the senior year. Students complete projects supervised by faculty mentors in the senior seminar courses. Undergraduate research experiences outside of normal courses are available with faculty mentors and are financially supported by the Welch Foundation. Advantages and Opportunities All classes and labs are taught by faculty members with Ph.D. degrees in chemistry . Classes are small and laboratories are taught by faculty. Freshman chemistry classes have not more than 30 students and organic chemistry classes have not more than 45 students. Faculty members are available in their offices to assist students outside of class. Purchases with funds from the Welch Foundation ($30,000/ year) provide equipment that supports undergraduate research opportunities as well as the undergraduate teaching laboratories. After a classroom introduction to the principles underlying research, the senior student selects and works one-on-one with a faculty member on a research project in the senior seminar courses. Facilities include four laboratories equipped with modern instrumentation. In particular, these labs contain a nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer, high-pressure liquid chromatograph, Fourier-transform infrared spectrophotometer, computer-interfaced ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer, several gas chromatographs, fluorescence spectrophotometer, and PC computers. Undergraduate Research Opportunities Besides the typical projects students complete in the senior seminar courses, chemistry major students may be invited to participate in undergraduate research projects outside of normal coursework and receive a stipend for their participation. Such students are designated as Welch Undergraduate Research Scholars as the research program is supported by the $30,000/ year Departmental Welch Grant. Current areas of research are the Quartz Crystal Microbalance, Inorganic Dirhuthenium Complexes, Porphyrins, Electrochemistry, Chromatorgraphy, Bucky Ball, and Organic Reaction Kinetics. Some of these projects have been published in national journals. Some have been presented as posters at the annual HBU Celebration of Scholarship Symposium or at other professional meetings for chemists. After Graduation Many Houston Baptist University chemistry graduates are practicing medicine and dentistry, and some are practicing research at the Ph.D. level. Others hold management positions in industry, while some are practicing law. Other chemistry majors have become pharmacists and other health professionals.
