Majoring in Spanish will help you develop proficiency in the Spanish Language and learn about the cultures, civilizations, and literatures of Spain. What is it? The Spanish major is designed to enable students to develop proficiency in understanding, speaking, and writing the language as well as develop an understanding and appreciation of the culture. Why choose Spanish? Spanish classes are proficiency-based classes where students develop proficiency to engage in oral and written exchanges in Spanish, to demonstrate understanding of oral and written material in Spanish , and to present information orally and in writing in Spanish. Culture: Students gain knowledge and understanding of the cultures where Spanish is spoken. Connections: In the Spanish classes, students use Spanish to make connections with other subject areas and to acquire information about other subjects. Community: Students participate in communities at home and around the world by using Spanish. Students use the language both within and beyond the University through activities such as participating in cultural events and using technology to communicate. They also have the opportunity of a Work Internship in Spanish . All majors are encouraged to spend time studying and traveling in a country where Spanish is spoken. Students are helped to show evidence of becoming a lifelong learner by using Spanish for personal enrichment and career development. Spanish classes are small, and students receive personal attention from faculty. The Language Center provides a support system of activities for computer, video, and interactive video. Requirements Students majoring in Spanish , including teacher certification candidates, take 31 semester hours of course work, including the following: Beginning Spanish Proficiency, Continuing Spanish Proficiency, Advanced Spanish Proficiency, two senior seminars, and three classes from the five following offerings: Individualized Spanish Proficiency (Advanced Conversation), Advanced Composition, Masterworks of Hispanic Literature and Culture, Hispanic Cultural Perspectives, and Work Internship in Spanish. The Spanish Club and Alpha Mu Gamma, National Collegiate Honor Society, are active organizations for persons majoring in or interested in Spanish Credit by Examination: Students coming to the University with language proficiency may receive credit for language proficiency. After Graduation Students with majors in Spanish and Teacher Certification are familiar with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Languages Other Than English and may enter the teaching profession. Students with majors in Spanish may enter graduate school in Spanish literature or enter professional schools in interpreting and translating, business, law, medicine, or seminary. Other students find employment in fields such as business, banking, government, foreign service, travel and leisure, hotel management, communications and journalism, and public relations.
