While the Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS) profession is primarily concerned with the analysis of body fluids and tissues useful in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, the profession unlocks the door for graduates to pursue a variety of careers in medicine, dentistry, and graduate studies in research, management and business. Students receive extensive didactic and practical training in the clinical areas of Diagnostic Chemistry, Hematology, Transfusion Medicine, Microbiology, Immunology, and Toxicology. They are also introduced to the concepts of cellular and molecular technology currently used in genetic testing, forensic investigations, and in the clinical assessment of AIDS, cancer, communicable diseases, and metabolic disorders. Clinical Laboratory Scientists The Clinical Laboratory Scientist possesses a variety of technical and intellectual skills, which are essential to CLS practice, and applicable to other professions and disciplines. These skills include: The proper handling and preparation of biological samples Performance of manual and automated test procedures which are discipline specific Operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining sophisticated, computerized laboratory equipment and diagnostic instruments Evaluation and interpretation of laboratory test data to ensure accuracy and reliability. Detecting and verifying abnormal results and confirming the presence of disease states.
