Because computer professionals have the opportunity to go in two directions, IWU prepares computer science majors for the technical aspects of software engineering, systems programming, and other highly technical positions. Computer information systems majors may choose application-oriented areas, such as business or graphic arts, in which to apply their expertise. Mission The mission of the computer information sciences department is to prepare students academically and spiritually for careers requiring strong analytical skills and problem-solving techniques, by equipping them with current computer expertise, technological research skill and a Christ-centered ability to work with people in developing systems based solutions to real world problems. Purpose The purpose of the computer information systems (CIS), computer internet development (CID), computer science (CSC) and computer software engineering (CSE) majors is to prepare students to create and maintain software for computer-based systems. Because CIS generally does not exist apart from other fields, students study sufficient amounts of other disciplines to be able to communicate effectively with experts in fields for which computer information systems are to be built. CSC students, on the other hand, focus their studies on advanced computer classes in order to attain a greater depth of understanding. Whereas CIS lends itself to applied computing, CSC is more theoretical, embodying a greater technical challenge. The CID major endeavors to merge the artistic and business elements of the World Wide Web with preparation for solid software development. It lends itself to the applied side as CIS does, but builds on a strong foundation of tools used in Internet development work. The CSE major entails learning to apply commonly accepted engineering principles to the development of software, especially very large software systems. With advanced classes alongside the CSC major, it prepares graduates for critical roles in shaping emerging software technology in the new century. All programs develop an understanding of systematic problem-solving techniques and the systems approach to the design of solutions. In addition, extensive emphasis is placed on the translation of algorithmic solutions to various languages and computing techniques. Computer majors learn several contemporary computer programming languages, such as Pascal, COBOL, C/C++, Ada, Java and assembler languages. These languages are used in applied courses throughout the program. The Applied Software Development Project gives students firsthand experience in creating a system, and the Senior Seminar gives students the opportunity to develop independent self-study skills for life-long use. Programming for class assignments is done on a variety of centralized and desktop computers. All of the computers are connected by the campus computer network, which is accessible from dedicated computer laboratories and dormitory "mini-labs." Additionally, each dormitory room has network connections for student-owned computers to make use of the network, if desired.
