Diagnostic Medical Sonography from Lake Superior College is a Campus Associate Medical Sonography and Ultrasound degree that prepares you for a Healthcare career. Program Description: Sonography is a diagnostic medical procedure which uses high-frequency sound waves to produce dynamic visual images of the human body. This technology can be used to examine many parts of the body such as the abdomen, breasts, female reproductive system, prostate, heart and blood vessels. The Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program provides the students with educational experiences in the classroom, laboratory and clinical facilities. Transportation to clinical sites, which are located throughout the region, is the responsibility of the student. Sonography job opportunities are found in clinics, hospitals, physician offices, public-health facilities, laboratories and other medical settings performing examinations in their areas of specialization. Career advancement opportunities exist in areas such as education, administration, research, sales representatives and technical advisors. The Diagnostic Medical Sonography program is not currently accredited, however will be seeking accreditation with the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Upon completion of the program and 12 months of full-time clinical work experience graduates of the program will be eligible to take the national registry exam. Program outcomes include: Record, analyze and integrate diagnostic data and other pertinent observations made during the medical ultrasound or other non-invasive diagnostic procedures for presentation to the interpreting physician. Demonstrate proficiency in the performance of appropriate procedures recording anatomic, pathologic and/or physiologic data for interpretation by a physician. Demonstrate understanding of ultrasound instrumentation, general protocols, selection of appropriate settings, scanning planes and methods. Exercise discretion and judgment in the performance of sonographic and/or other non-invasive diagnostic services. Demonstrate appropriate communication skills with patient and colleagues. Act in a professional and ethical manner (as outlined by the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography). Provide patient education related to medical ultrasound and other non-invasive diagnostic services.
