This less-than-one-year certificate program prepares students for employment as a phlebotomist . It will also prepare students for certification examinations of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists and the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences. To accomplish these goals, the program combines classroom instruction with lab work and clinical experience. Skill areas covered are: vacuum collections, arterial specimen collection, capillary skin punctures, butterfly needles, blood cultures and specimen collection on adults, children and infants. A group of students moves through this training as a cohort. Classes are tailored specifically to these students, who attend class for approximately 35 hours a week. The first 11 weeks of the training are in the classroom. The last four weeks are in a clinic, hospital or physician's office. Student Learning Outcomes Students who successfully complete a certificate in Phlebotomy will: Practice safe laboratory procedures for bloodborne pathogens. Effectively perform the three methods of venipuncture the evacuated tube system or winged infusion/butterfly system, or syringe, and the skin puncture method using lancets and tubes. Provide patient care and comfort with empathy. Abide by the ethical and professional conduct of medical professionals.
