This less-than-one-year certificate program provides prospective veterinary assistants/technicians with education and experience in commonly used medical and surgical techniques, as well as an understanding of common disease states of animals . The program also provides an introduction to animal hospital management, business procedures and job preparation skills. Students will be able to step into an entry-level position with the confidence and competence necessary to be a productive addition to the staff. The structure of the program is integrative, with each week focusing on one or more related topics and weekly laboratory time devoted to reinforcing those topics. Guest speakers, such as board-certified specialists and industry representatives, cover specific areas. The curriculum focuses primarily on small animal species, but information regarding large animal species is incorporated wherever possible to prepare students for the national board exam. Some classes are held at Oregon State University. The cooperative work experience will take place in an area veterinary clinic or hospital. A group of students complete the training together and attend class for approximately 35 hours a week. Eight hours each week is spent working and observing in a local veterinary clinic or hospital. Student Learning Outcomes Students who successfully complete a certificate in Veterinary Assistant will: Perform appropriate medical procedures on a variety of species. Effectively communicate with clients, co-workers, and medical personnel. Utilize standard veterinary office protocol and forms.
