Art Therapy from Long Island University - C W Post Campus - Brookville NY is a Campus Master Alternative medicine degree that prepares you for a Healthcare career. The Art Therapy program at Long Island University, C.W. Post offers a dynamic, creative, education experience that leads to a Master of Arts in Clinical Art Therapy. As an A.A.T.A. and New York State (for qualifying license) approved training program since 1995, students are welcome to study full or part-time in a curriculum that offers opportunities for specialization of study in a climate of individualized attention. We are a small and intimate program where class size ranges from 8 to 20 students. Emphasis is placed upon creating an art therapy community, whereby students, faculty, the art department, as well as the various clinical field-sites, all contribute to a cohesive, stimulating training experience. The role of the art process and art object play a unique role in the philosophy of the L.I.U./C.W. Post curriculum. Art is made in experiential art therapy seminars as well as in art studio settings where six credits are taken in drawing, painting, clayworks and studio elective work. In-depth exploration of the diagnostic value of painting, drawing and sculpture is examined within the child and adult art therapy clinical setting utilizing theories, methods and research findings. Multicultural methods of art therapy treatment are developed for culturally diverse client populations. Organized visits to Long Island and New York City museums and galleries are often offered to augment course studies. Students exhibit their art work a minimum of two times per year in the student galleries as part of art therapy theme shows or as an individual artist. The internship component of the art therapy program at Long Island University emphasizes placements which meet the professional and personal interests of each student. It is an opportunity to draw upon the vast mental health and rehabilitative resources of the New York Metropolitan area. Overseen by clinical internship coordinator, Professor Naomi Schwartz, MA, ATR-BC, LCAT, students utilize their placements as a means of specializing with different client populations. Additionally, internships are offered nationally and internationally. We are strongly connected to the international Art Therapy community and can facilitate internship placements outside of the United States. The integration of theory, practice, creativity and self-growth remain the ultimate goal of the L.I.U. program. We are committed to providing a quality experience that will prepare each student for a professional career in art therapy. Recent outcome data on job placement reveals that 97% of the L.I.U. graduates landed a full-time art therapy position within one year of graduation. Our students return year after year as guest speakers and as mentors, helping to guide current students towards their professional goals. Because our faculty have both local and national and international visibility, students often make use of faculty contacts as a means of finding jobs, internships and other professional opportunities.
